iPhone 4 and being a fan for the day

July 30th, 2010

The Apple iPhone 4 was finally released at Midnight last night. I’m not much of an Apple fanboi as they are called but definitely had my eye on the iPhone for a while. While aware of the antenna issues and constant criticism from non-iPhoners, I was still keen to get one.

As a dancer, I often film the dances I choreograph as well as the ones I learn from other people. It makes it alot easier than doing a write up (writing the dances step by step). Second reason, I store all my music on my ipod and my other dancer friends (and their dance studios) all have docks. Docks/iPods make carrying your music so much easier and loses the frustration from trying to burn CD’s.

So often when on my dancing duties I would be carrying around my camera, iPod and phone. Pretty poor justification for most people I guess but it will make things really convenient for me. Everywhere I go I am guaranteed to take my phone, so gone will be the days I get to dancing and realise I have forgotten my music or the footage of the dance.

So all bad publicity and antenna-gate aside, I was still keen. Not so keen to go at Midnight but was lucky enough to pick one up from the City Optus Store. Store opened at 8am so I arrived at about 7:30am and was probably #20 or so in the line.

From the beginning the Optus guy told us that from about my point in the line (the girl and guy behind me) there were slim chances on picking up a headset today. There were at least two people who were ahead of me in the line who could not get the phone today due to Identification issues (they did not walk out happy people).

I was set on only waiting 30 mins after opening time and if the line still had not moved, I would have just gone to work. Then 30 minutes later I was the 3rd person from the door, the suspense and chance of just getting in too hard to walk away from!

Finally at 8:45am I got let in, the guy came offered the Black 32GB (which is all they had left – I was actually aiming for a 16GB) and told me it was the LAST one. I could not believe my luck. Surely it was not, but he said it was the last one in the box.

The sighs from the two people behind me made me a wee sad :( The girl who was in the line behind me was quite nice and provided company whilst in the freezing cold!  She had actually gone to the Optus Midnight launch on Murray Street and seeing the hundreds of people there, tried her chances the next morning. I really hope the Optus guy was wrong and she at least got one!

So my experience as an Apple fan-girl for the day? You could definitely feel the excitement the Apple fans generate amongst each other. The marketing does itself amongst these guys. The lines for Telestra and Optus seemed modest but the Apple Store down the road was crazy! They had even blocked one lane of traffic for the line! I hope they got Council approval!!

I am glad to have picked up my toy, but almost lost my toes in the process. I was stupid enough to wear heels on a freezing morning and had really numb toes by the time I got inside the store. While I walked away a happy customer with a new phone and an Optus cupcake, I don’t think I will do the fan-lining up experience again…

So far I have synced my phone, sent some txts and put on a few apps. Have not made any phone calls yet but I do have one of those rubber band things that apparently remedies the antenna issue SHOULD I have any.

And thats the story of how I sold my soul to Apple and Optus for the next 24 months!

Disney Party – Done and Dusted

July 30th, 2010

The Disney Party has come and gone, and it was a blast!

In the week leading up to the party, I was hard at work to finish my costume. My poor machine probably needs a good clean and rest after that week…

After a failure with the harem pants (I think the material just wasnt suitable) I opted for a long skirt with a split instead. For the belt I inserted a felt strip inside the gold belt and glued stones onto the belt. For the top I sewed on some gold tassles.

I picked up a glue gun from Spotlight. All I can say is, glue guns are AWESOME! There shall be more exciting projects involving said Glue Gun

My costume is not as detailed as Princess Tamina’s but I think I achieved the same effect. Quite a few people asked if  I was Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, but Prince of Persia isnt as well known/popular.

Here is the final result!

While it was fun and I recieved alot of compliments for my creativity, I think next time I will EBAY a fancy dress!

Work in Progress…

July 6th, 2010

As mentioned in my earlier post, a friend of mine is having a Disney Fancy dress party. After much consideration (and still not knowing what Alex will go as), I have decided to go as Princess Tamina from Disney’s Prince of Persia Movie. Unfortunately I saw the movie recently and it is nowhere as awesome as the Pirates of the Carribean movie. I think Prince of Persia was meant to be Disney’s next movie franchise after Pirates (considering there are many Prince of Persia games). However after that movie I am not sure I would bother with the rest.

Back on topic.

When I saw the movie poster I was instantly excited. Gemma Arterton (who plays Princess Tamina) was wearing this pink and gold costume that was WOW.

Knowing that most of the Disney Princesses would be taken and either have Blonde Hair (I did consider Mulan and Princess Jasmine) I figured Tamina would be a pretty cool choice. She actually only wears that outfit for about 3 seconds in the movie but it was  the prettiest one of them all, so the pink one it is.

The costume is quite detailed and complex. From the few seconds I actually saw the costume in the movie, the bottom looked like a long skirt/pants. Sticking with the Middle East theme, I will instead wear harem pants made from pink chiffon. The top will be a V top made from a lighter pink material (recycled from a Bardot strapless top I once picked up in a Melbourne outlet store for $2) with gold trimming sewn on for detail. I will also do my make up and see if I can get fake tatoos on my hands like she did for the movie!

GiannyL is a creative chic who has many cool videos on her blog and YouTube showing how to recycle old clothes into different things. Her videos are inspiring and simple and it shows that with a bit of creativity, you can create a whole new outfit out of old. She also makes various clothing items without patterns. Amazing!

Check out GiannyL’s video on how to make harem pants here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WbVSn0w8rg

I am not sure I will have my pants that baggy though.

Tonight I made a draft version of the top using the same strapless top I will be using to make the pink one, except this one was green.

Its a bit rough but hopefully the pink one will be alot neater. At the moment it looks bland but  hopefully with the gold detail it will look closer to the one in the movie. The costume in the movie was amazing and I know I won’t get an exact version but I am just  hoping to replicate it enough to be recognisable :)

The top will simply tie up at the back and I will have gold straps at the front which will go up around the back of my neck.

In the next week or so I will do the pink top and hopefully get started on the Harem  pants. I just hope the material does not give me a hard time! The Pink chiffon I will be using is on the left of the picture below. A pretty rose colour :) and only $4 p/m at the Spotlight sale!

I will be back… with hopefully a top and some progress on my Harem pants! Wish me luck!!

Kitty Coats

July 3rd, 2010

Earlier this year, I purchased a small sewing machine. Since I do dancing and am short in height I figured it would be handy to be able to take up my own pants and sew my own dance costumes. So far it hasn’t had much use, sewing is more time consuming than I thought and its hard to find time to do it. Especially since I do not have a designated sewing room (note: it is on the wishlist!).

I have gone wild at spotlight and stocked up on patterns, bolts of cloth, thread and other things like elastic and velcro. I just need to get around to doing it, as well as a beginner sewing class. I admit I am complete noob and have no idea on the basics of sewing (last time I sewed was in highschool and that was many many years ago!).

Hopefully in the near future I will complete other small projects! My next one is to make Tamina’s pink costume from the Prince of Persia for a friends upcoming Disney Fancy Dress party. I have the chiffon! Now to learn how to sew with it!!

One of the patterns I picked up from Spotlight was a Simplicity pattern for little dog coats. I don’t have a dog but I do have two cats so I figured I would just use the same pattern. This is my first time using a pattern (again please note I am a complete noob!) so there was a bit of trial and error and after 2 attempts, I definately have thought of ideas to use in the future.

The first model is Maksim, isnt he beautiful! Unfortnately I was a bit slack and did not hem the jumper… The jumper was also way too big for him… He wouldnt fit the XS size but I think I may need to make the S size a tad smaller so it fits him nicely.

The second model is Sapphire. For her coat I used the XS pattern and hemmed the coat so it looks alot nicer. It also fits perfectly too! Hehe I am not too far from becoming the crazy cat lady…

For both coats I used fleece material so it should keep them nice and warm :) During production I had an issue with my bobbin getting tangled. After a few stitches the machine would jam and I would end up pulling this massive cluster of thread from the bobbin cage. I gave my machine a quick oiling and it worked fine after that *phew!*

My ‘Workstation’. My little Berentte E55 is there too! I was doing this while watching Fremantle FC smash Port Adelaide and the traumatising injury of  Barlow!

More Richard & Kahlan! – Terry Goodkind Announces New Novel

April 6th, 2010

The most exciting announcement possible has been made! Terry Goodkind, author of the outstanding Sword of Truth book series, has announced an upcoming Richard and Kahlan novel due for release in early 2011.

As a big fan of the books and even the TV adaptation, this is really exciting news! Did I mention it was exciting?!?!

No real details have been revealed yet. All we know at this stage is that the book will be centered on the two main protagonists from the Sword of Truth series. What sort of adventures will they have? Is there a new threat to the world?

We will have to wait!

2011 will be a big year for Fantasy book lovers as we may be looking forward to more books for the Wheel of Time (Towers of Midnight & A Memory of Light), Rain Wild Chronicles (already 2 books out!) and now Goodkind’s novel.

See Terry Goodkind’s preview here (warning it leaves you in suspense) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkeLrWhp5fc

Fantasy Book Clubs in Perth?

March 29th, 2010

So, I am currently halfway through ‘Fool’s Fate’ – the final book of the Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb. I have read the Farseer, Liveship and Tawny Man trilogies before, but with the new Rain Wild Chronicles I needed a quick refresher (3 trilogies worth). While I realise the Dragon’s Keeper and Dragon Haven have now been long released… I am a paper back fiend and waited a long time for its release, because dragging around hardback novels in your handbag can get quite awkward.

Anyway I started wondering if any Fantasy Book Clubs exist in Perth. A quick google search gave me no results. I like to think that like myself there are many other Fantasy book lovers out there that would like a group of like minded people to catch up and discuss these awesome books. As well as give recommendations and what not. I started reading this genre about 6 years ago and have read the following:

  1. Robin Hobb (Farseer, Liveship, Tawny Man & Soldier Son trilogies).
  2. Robert Jordan – only up to book 6 (I am reading two book series at the same time).
  3. Terry Goodkind – All of the books and I LOVED them! Even the TV adaptation despite the fact it does swerve off the original story and world by Terry Goodkind.

So it looks like a pretty dismal effort (although it does tally up to 29 books or so!). I do want to expand my library but often get stumped at the bookstore, or on Book Depository. ‘What do I read next?’ While there is plenty of reviews online, I start to think it would be pretty cool if I had someone actually telling me…

So, I would like to post my questions to any people from Perth, WA…

Is there a current Fantasy Book club that I am not aware of yet? That have meet ups and the like?

Or… Would anyone be interested in creating a fantasy book club?

P.S. I am considering getting into Ian Irvine… he is an Australian author after all…
